Conquista

A representation of Pizarro and Atahualpa meeting

The administration of Coca soon passed into the hands of the Conquistadores under the “Encomienda” (land parcels) system that had as its goal the building of great numbers of Catholic churches. It must be said at this point that those indigenous people that were forced to build the Catholic churches, sometimes in the very same spots that were already sacred for them; they never renounced their own gods. They even sculpted images of their own gods into the stones of the churches. Whilst touring churches today, it is easy to spot images of the sun, the moon, the condor, the lizard, the puma, the Coca leaf etc. This demonstrates that the Conquistadores, even with the weapon of the Inquisition, could never cut the roots of the Andean religion.
